The Venetian Macao (they spell it with an O there, unlike most places) opened on August 28, 2007. At 550,000 square feet, it is the largest casino in the world. By way of comparison, the Venetian in Las Vegas is only 120,000 square feet, or 22% as big. The casino is similar in look to the Palazzo in Las Vegas, but of course, much larger. The shopping area and canals look almost exactly like those of the Venetian in Las Vegas, but larger.

I'm not the only one to wonder at the enormity of the Venetian. On a Friday afternoon when I visited the casino was very crowded with tourists, especially in comparison to other western-owned casinos. I played a little bit, and based on a small sampling, I found quite a few dealers spoke English, which is hard to find at any other casino in Macau.

My favorite moment at the Venetian was passing juggling pins with their jester. Somebody in a suit offered me a job afterward.

This is Dr. Tom Yam in the hotel lobby. He was kind enough to keep me company for a day.

The statues at the Venetian in Vegas don't make the peace sign.

With the roaming muscians. I didn't know I would look like such a dork when I posed, but this is how everybody poses in China.

I thought this was a statue of Magellan, but a reader wrote to me claiming it was probably Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda.

This is a golf course on the casino roof, as seen through hotel window. Outstanding idea!
