The Wynn Macau is like a mini version of the Wynn Las Vegas. Like the Las Vegas property, the décor is colorful, and perhaps a bit over the top. Some find it obnoxious, but I kind of like it. I admire Wynn for trying a different look and following his dream.

I stayed at the Wynn for both my 2007 and 2009 visits. Both times, everybody was extremely nice to me. Every worker you passed in the hotel hallways greeted you with a "good morning/day/evening" and a smile. By the pool, attendants put down towels on your chair and brought complimentary cold washcloths and ice water. I've been to Europe three times, Asia five times, Australia once, and been all over North America, and have never had better service anywhere. Maybe some other high-end Macau properties are just as good. My next visit I promise to try another one to find out.

The Wynn offers two forms of free entertainment. The first is the fountain show outside the front door, much like one at the Bellagio. Although the Macau lake is much smaller than that of the Bellagio, I think the water shoots up just as high, and at night they also spray fire balls. I like the Macau version better because you can get right up close to the jets, and get a little wet if the wind is in your face. The other attraction is the "Fortune Tree." When I was there I expected to see a tree, but a big dragon came out of a dome on the floor. It was pretty impressive, but I still wondered what happened to the tree. Somebody later told me that the tree and dragon alternate shows.

The food in Macau is generally outstanding. As with any casino, the food may not be as biting as an independent restaurant on the streets, but will go down easier for those with sensitive American taste buds, like those of your humble narrator. I'm not good at reviewing restaurants but I found the Italian Teatro restaurant very tasty and the service fast and attentive. I had the predetermined five-course meal, an option I always appreciate. "Freedom from choice is what you want." - Devo. I have eaten at the casual Café Esplanada lots of times. In addition to the lobby restaurant, you get a menu at the pool, and they will bring anything on it right to your chair. The food there is simple but good. I love muesli (which is hard to find in the U.S.) and the Wynn's muesli is the best I have ever had.

The Wynn casino deserves special mention for allowing re-splitting aces in blackjack. The only other casino to allow that is the MGM. This makes the two properties tie for the best blackjack in Macau, with a house edge of 0.10% under basic strategy.

My room, which was just a standard one, was huge. Mind you, this was in the part of the hotel for the common folk. Doors in the hallway separate a portion for their VIPs, as they also do in Las Vegas. The pictures below of my room speak louder than my words can. In addition, there was a big bowl of fruit when I arrived, including a piece of dragon fruit, and a box of nine chocolates. Later one of the maids personally gave me a gift of four bottles of bathroom gels. I didn't want to lug the box back home, so I gave it to a taxi driver as a tip. These gifts I don't think were any kind of special treatment, after all, I still had to pay for my room, which was HK$ 1,500 a night, or US$ 194.

There is something about mattresses in East Asia and Australia that are much more comfortable yet firm than American mattresses. I have a bad back, and I'll pay for it the next day if I sleep on a mattress that is too soft. However, I usually get a good night's sleep in Asia and Australia, and the Wynn's beds are no exception. In fact, I can't think of any I like better. I've asked at several mattress stores in the U.S. what the secret is of Asian mattresses, but all I ever get is a promise that the mattresses in front of my nose are even better. Maybe it is just psychosomatic, because I'm happy to not be sleeping in an airplane chair. If not, and you know the secret, please let me in on it. Better yet, tell me where I can buy an Asian mattress in Las Vegas.
